The Community - Once a farming community, Billerica grew to become a thriving textile producer during the 1800's, before blooming into today's lovely suburban community. Some of Billerica's more than 340 years of history are still alive and in evidence. Thomas Ditson, tarred and feathered by the British for attempting to buy a musket during the revolutionary war, is still immortalized in song, and is celebrated here in town on "Yankee Doodle Weekend" a wonderful fall family event, with a parade, a fair and fireworks.

Billerica is a family community. Folks tend to be a little younger here than in the surrounding communities because Billerica is affordable, attractive, convenient, and energetic. There's a strong sense of community spirit.

All of which makes Billerica an especially nice place to live.

Downtown Billerica

Commuting - Billerica's strategic location between Route 495 and 128, near to Route 93 and bisected by Routes 3 and 3A make highway access easy and commuting a cinch. Commuter rail and regular bus service, both the local LRTA and service to Boston, add to the easy accessibility that residents enjoy.

Shopping - Shopping facilities are top-notch. The broad selection in town is complemented by the facilities at nearby Burlington Mall, downtown Lowell, and more. And with Boston only 19 miles away, Billerica is a mecca for the "shop-til-I-drop" type.

Town Government - Town Meeting sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday beginning the first Tuesday in May and the first Tuesday in October. Spring and Fall Town Meetings run twice a week until business is concluded.

Sports - If Billerica, Massachusetts had a middle name, it would be sports. The town has an enviable record, perhaps an unmatched one, for encouraging and involving its children, of all ages, in sports and recreational activities. Billerica produces talented athletes and athletic teams year after year.

Recreation - Billerica offers town playing fields, playgrounds, and Micozzi Beach at Nutting's Lake.

There are a variety of youth and adult athletic associations.

National Resources - Public and semi-public land in Billerica totals 1,817 acres or slightly more than 10 percent of the town's total acreage of 16,896. Town forest and conservation lands total 407 acres.

Much of the natural resource land provides residents with areas to hike, picnic, canoe, fish, ice skate, cross country ski, swim, and bird watch.

Schools - The Billerica school system is exceptional, and it's not by accident. Town officials, teachers and residents pay a lot of attention to the education provided by the 10 schools in town. One result of this attention is obvious by the impressive percentage of high school students who continue on to higher education. Billerica residents also benefit from the easy availability of the Shawsheen Valley Regional Technical School, as well as nearby Middlesex Community College and the University of Massachusetts/Lowell.

There are six elementary schools (grades kindergarten to five) in town. Billerica utilizes the neighborhood elementary school concept, which means that students in grades K through five will attend the elementary school in their geographic area of town. There are two middle schools (grades six to eight) and one high school (grades nine to twelve). There are approximately 6,200 students enrolled in Billerica's schools.
